Banner concept art contest
WINNER:
RUNNER-UP:
We're having a concept art contest to decide what our new banner for the forum will look like!
For those who don't know what concept art is, that's a rough sketch to give someone an idea of what something will look like. Sort of like the blueprint.
Anyway, submit your concept art entries on this page. We'll close the entry period in two weeks (deadline = June 24 at 23:59 GMT)
After the entries are in, we'll set up a poll in the Sporum to see whose concept art will be the foundation for our new banner. Then, we'll bring the art to life (I believe Dino has volunteered to do this, but we might get someone else involved-- we'll see how things go).
Rules for concept art entries:
Concept art should be drawn using one or two colors of lead or ink on white paper, or created via digital means.
Aspect ratio should be typical banner aspect ratio-- approximately 1 unit high and 7 units wide. (A unit is not a specific measurement).
The banner must feature Tyrannosaurus rex, Microraptor, and Dilophosaurus.
The banner must legibly read "The Bone Bed", with this clearly being the forum name, and "the dinosaur forum" as well.

Smart move posting this.
Also smart move setting the deadline to two weeks from now; next week is my last week of school and then its exams, meaning I will actually have large blocks to time to be able to work on things.
For the record, yes, I am fine making the banner.

Re: Banner concept art contest
I have an entry!
This includes a Tyrannosaurus, Wooly Mammoth, Anomalocaris, Dilophosaurus Skull, Smilodon Skull, Trilobites, and a small Raptor Claw by the title. I went against my JP-biased instincts for this, and I feathered your dern T. Rex.
I was thiniking either Dino could that digital art stuff he does, or we could comprise it of actual Spore creatures. We could take either already made creatures or make newer, better ones and use assymetry to pose them. Then someone could do some fancy stuff for the background, because I have no good idea for it.
What do you think?

Re: Banner concept art contest
Fine work! Added to the OP.
And, best of all, should that be the winning entry, I can easily condense it by chopping off the skulls and replacing the text to make it the banner for the Sporum thread as well.
I'm fine with making most of the creatures (and possibly even the skulls) in Spore, although I would need your help for the mammoth most certainly.

Re: Banner concept art contest
Hey, hey, hey. Sorry, but the winners were Rex, Dilophosaurus, and Microraptor. I see two winners and a three of the runner-ups. What happened? Why are the rules different? This is unfair! I agree with 94titano. I like it a lot, it's beautifully done, it's just gone Matrix, bending the rules.

Sorry, guys. It just said to design a banner, and the only thing it ordered me to put on was a Rex.

Re: Banner concept art contest
So it was schnautzr! You said T-Rex was the only needed one, when on page 13 (http://forum.spore.com/jforum/posts/list/180/56458.page) the clear winners were clearly Dilophosaurus and Microraptor as well! Change that third rule, or my Microraptors will get you.

Um....a three-way tie? This is news to me. I can't do much at the moment as far as checking the link you provided, but I believe it was very clear at the time we closed the voting period that Tyrannosaurus was the undeniable elected winner.

Re: Banner concept art contest
Yeah, but everyone thought that Rex was too popular to win. We went to have the 2nd place winners in the Banner too. That way the Banner would have 3 species in it. One winner is not enough. The idea was 1st, 2nd, and 3rd would all be featured in the banner, not just 1st! Or else Rex would always win.schnautzr wrote:Um....a three-way tie? This is news to me. Re: Banner concept art contest
As I stated previously, I'm not able to check the link at the moment (due to technical restrictions), but I do remember the discussion...at least quite a bit of it. I think the general consensus was (don't quote me, though) that to call Tyrannosaurus too popular was like erasing Jefferson from the history books-- simply wrong. I don't remember any actual opposition to Tyrannosaurus other than prejudices that we all were willing to let pass.
Anyway, I'll check the link as soon as I can tomorrow, as that is the earliest I will be able to access it. If I'm wrong, then I'll definitely rewrite the rules in the OP of this thread.

You're not getting what I'm saying. 1 Dinosaur is not enough. The Top 3 winners would be featured in the Banner. That was the plan, anyway. I'm not saying T-Rex is replaced by Microraptor, but Microraptor and T-Rex and Dilophosaurus are Together!

I can just add in a Microraptor if this is that crucial to you. Just give me a couple of days.

Hmmm...I can see where you drew the conclusion you did, Hermes...there's no rule that the runners-up must be included; I've left that to the liberty of the artist. In fact, I encourage variety. It would be good to see a few entries with multiple creatures.

Re: Banner concept art contest
No you don't! But there was a rule that stated 3rd and 2nd place winners must be featured in the banner, and the rest is up the the creator. Since 2nd had a tie, Microraptor and Dilophosaurus must be featured.schnautzr wrote:Hmmm...I can see where you drew the conclusion you did, Hermes...there's no rule that the runners-up must be included; I've left that to the liberty of the artist. That's a must.
I'm not saying only Rex, or only Micro/Dilopho. I'm saying all 3, with any others of the drawer's choice! That was the rule! From the start! All on pages 13 and 14!

Re: Banner concept art contest
Sorry, not one of the posts on those two pages says that. DinoLord suggested we do something instead of Tyrannosaurus, and there was some head-nodding, but in the end no change was made because we decided to put aside our prejudices against Tyrannosaurus. I'm not going to stop you from doing what you like with your entry, though. After all, a poll will determine the winner. And where do you see the "rule" you speak of regarding runners-up? Please give actual quotes instead of a link to the page...it's difficult to scan through a whole page and find what you're hoping I find.

Re: Banner concept art contest
I know the poll was up for a while, but I think the results are a little unrepresenting if you know what I mean. For a club about creating all kinds of creatures spanning all of prehistory, why do we have 3 theropods from the Mesozoic?schnautzr wrote:Sorry, not one of the posts on those two pages says that. Implied all three. All three would be in the banner!
The rule. All I'm asking. The rule.
Must include Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dilophosaurus, and Microraptor, but any other species of your choice.

I sense heat...any reason you're worked up over this?
I can't change the rules midway through the contest. That would be unfair to people who have already drawn theirs and may or may not have uploaded them already. But I can update the OP to let folks know that you'll be more likely to vote for it if it has these three theropods, if you like.

I'm getting worked up because I expected Dilopho, Rex, and Micro, together with any others, and that's what I voted for, that's what came up in the poll, but that's not what's happening.schnautzr wrote:I sense heat...any reason you're worked up over this?
Can we change the rule, then anyone who did it before the rule was changed is excused?I can't change the rules midway through the contest.
